Submit work for solo exhibition at Garbos Gallery Space

Solo Show at Garbos Southsea

We have recently taken over the Just Add Art and Island Art exhibition spaces at Garbos in Southsea and the Orthodontist Gallery space.  We have been preparing to launch our first exhibitions there for some time and we finally have the date of the first exhibition at Garbos exhibition space in Southsea.

This is an opportunity for an artist working in any 2D medium, including illustration and graphic design to have a small solo show at Garbos in Southsea.  Running for a period of 2 months this is a chance to showcase your talent to a wider audience and to make art matter in the community.

As one of our new Art Outreach Spaces Garbos is a busy and popular modern hair salon in Southsea with an exhibition space at the front of the space separate from the rest of the gallery.

There is no theme and the only prerequisite is that work submitted is not offensive (graphic nudity, swear words, concerning religion, etc) and ready to be hung.

This space can accommodate between 1 large (2x2m) piece or numerous smaller pieces.

Private view: Work in Progress

In December we celebrated the new look Sticks with a private view to launch the CFA “Work in Progress” exhibition.

We ate mince pies and ginger biscuits and mulled wine flowed (well ok simmered) and there was some rather great art from developing artists on show too!  Readying themselves to step onto the art world stage after graduation, these emerging artists were on hand to speak with whoever had questions about their work.

Molly Burnip discussing her work with Professor Catherine Harper

It was fantastic to see so many of the artists come down and members of Portsmouth University’s CCI Faculty, including Dean Professor Catherine Harper to celebrate what had been achieved.

This marked three firsts,:

the first part of our renovations in Sticks

the first exhibition in our renovated space

and

the first in a series of exhibitions by Portsmouth University CFA BA as they approach their graduation.

We’re so excited about the future and hope you join us on the journey!

Work in Progress Private View – 10th Dec

Today is a special day, it is the launch of our new exhibition with Portsmouth University’s CCI Faculty.  This evening we will be opening up Sticks in Fareham to a preview of CFA: Work in Progress.

Private View Thursday 10th Dec -- Work in Progress

What’s it about….?

This new show offers a chance for members of the public to see what goes on behind the creation of a piece of art.  It enables us to see the process of making art, and as this is the first in a series of exhibition detailing these emerging artists and their move into being artists out on their own, the progress they make on their work throughout their final year of study, culminating in their degree show to be held at Portsmouth University and in London next year.

The private view runs between 5:30-7:30pm this evening and all the artists will be on hand to discuss their work with you and answer any questions.  The Live Art Local CIC/Sticks gallery team will also be there to discuss and answer any questions you might have about us and what we plan for the future.

There will also be free food and drink and if we can make them in time lovely homemade mince pies and mulled wine to get you in the festive spirit!

Don’t know where sticks is, don’t worry, you can find us in the Fareham Shopping Centre at Unit 79a just inside opposite Millets

Can’t make the preview don’t worry we are open every Thursday – Saturday 10:30 am – 3pm

Christmas Art Market Locks Heath

Rainy Weather…………………

On Saturday 28th November we held our Christmas Artist-Maker market at Locks Heath Shopping Village.  Sadly due to the weather and our offer to participating artists of a refund if they decided not to come owing to the weather we were down considerably on our original number of artists and makers.

Still that is all part of being British and our weather.  We will be back in 2016

3 exhibitions one gallery

We have been quite bad at updating the blog lately which is not good (we consider ourselves severely reprimanded by ourselves).  But so much has been happening that it is very difficult to find the time to tell you all…….

We currently have three exhibitions on display in Fareham (to read more about the current shows please click on the images to be taken to that page):

Human at Sticks;

3 exhibitions one gallery -- A4-poster-human

Surveillance at Cafe Ethos; and

3 exhibitions one gallery -- surveillance flyer

from tomorrow, Boxes of Oranges at Ferneham Hall

3 exhibitions one gallery -- Christina-Evans-Boxes-of-Oranges

This has been a very exciting month as it is the first exhibitions Sticks have placed in outreach venues.  This is a vital part of our mission to get art out there and to engage the community in the places they visit; whether that be a gallery space, a cafe or a theatre.

The exhibitions we have this month include, photography, film, painting, art books and digital art. If you live in Fareham and long to see more contemporary work in your area then do come an have a look and be part of the change we are spearheading.

We hope you can make it to some of the shows and if you’re an artist interested in getting involved and submitting your work then join us through Live Art Local CIC and submit your work for free; you also get a directory listing; the chance to sell your work with us and various other things.

HOPE: Private View Thursday 11th June Fareham

This Thursday is the private view for our newest exhibition: HOPE. Featuring artists from around the UK working in a variety of media, this latest exhibition asks what is hope and what happens when hope is lost; where do we go next?

The private view begins at 5:30 and ends at 7:30pm. We will have wine and nibbles available for our guests, and being the lovely kind of people we are, there will even be soft drinks for those drivers and tee-totallers among you!

Great Little Artists….

We wanted to share this image with you of a local mini artist who we met with a couple of weeks ago.  He loves football and art and a week after talking with us he returned with his mum and older brother with a picture he promised us the week before to add to our kids and community art wall.

His mum said he had been looking forward to bringing in his work all week…. things like this make us proud and happy.

Sticks first show

So on Thursday 7th May we launched the physical Sticks Gallery and held the inaugural private view of an exhibition at our temporary contemporary gallery space in Fareham Hampshire.

The evening was a great success, fantastic local artists we know and love, came down.  Artists we’d never met before turned up; shop workers, local press……  a right mixture of all sorts of people.

It was a great chance to tell people and the local paper what we hope to achieve and how as part of our plan, we aim to be the first autism friendly gallery.  We have done a lot to make this a reality; including creating an art gallery social story; the use of PECs, autism art drop ins, a chill out area, and low level lighting.  You can even download a copy of our social story from this site, or through the Live Art Local site.
