LAST MINUTE OPPORTUNITY: take over our space for your art

This is an opportunity for all artist members to come in to our space next week and use it as a studio.  Our current exhibition ends with the closing event on Saturday 25th March and with the exception of workshops, will not properly re-open until our new exhibition on  22nd April.

In the intervening period, we are looking at piloting opening up our space to other artists during these gaps when we are not painting the space or installing/de-installing and allowing them to take over the space.  The one caveat is that the space remains open during these times and artists interact with the public should they come in.

As the project develops we could also consider mini exhibitions in the space during this time which are led by the artist and which last for a week at a time.

This current opportunity will run (very last minute) from the afternoon on the 28th March until 2nd April.  If interested please email beth@sticksgallery.co.uk with some information about your work.

Please Note: there is no water supply to the gallery

Join CAS Artists Post it Art Exchange Pilot

Chapel Arts Studios artists are currently piloting an exciting new project where artists get to participate in a dialogue with another artist creating new work in response to a piece they are sent by the artist they are paired with.

Although the deadline has gone they are still currently accepting new artists and will pair more artists this Friday (3rd March).  The link to find out more is http://www.chapelartsstudios.co.uk/events/event/pilot-cas-postit/

RESPONSE: Calling all Artists

This January we are launching a new opportunity in Sticks Gallery for up to 4 artists to use the space to create an exhibition in real time responding to the previous artists’ work.

response

Is an exciting new project to see what happens when artists are asked to directly respond to the work of someone else and where there are no other rules or expectations.

During their week the selected artist’s will be able to use the whole of the downstairs of Sticks Gallery as a studio in which to work, with the door open so that people may come in and observe the artist’s as they create their responses and learn more about their work.

We want this to be used by artists as a testing ground and a way to explore ideas about play and what constitutes a work of art.  We will provide various materials to the selected artists and supply each artist with £20 to purchase other materials as they deem fit.  We are interested in what ways artists respond to a limited budget and working with other materials.  We are particularly interested in artists who want to challenge themselves by working in a different medium to they are used to.  Artists are also free to use our equipment in the showcasing of their work; this includes projectors, screens a PA system, blur ray player, etc and where necessary artists are free to bring in equipment and/or materials from home (e.g. if they are a photographer).

Four artists will be selected and each artist will have a week in which to create their work during our normal opening times (other times can be arranged via discussion), with each artist adding to the previous work created.

Response will form an ongoing curatorial project with each artist able to reshape the meaning of the exhibition and re-position the former artists’ work.

Upon the conclusion of the last week the resulting exhibition will remain open until 18th February on our usual days.

The dates for the micro-residencies are:

Week 1: Jan 9th – 15th

Week 2: Jan 16th – 22nd

Week 3: Jan 23rd – 29th

Week 4: Jan 30th – 5th Feb

Artists interested in responding to this call out are asked to send a 100 word (maximum) response explaining why they’re interested in this project and up to 5 examples of their work that they feel best reflects their practice to admin@sticksgallery.co.uk.  We welcome applications from artists working in all media, including visual, written and sound

Solo Show Opportunity in Southsea

This is an opportunity for an artist or collective working in any 2D media, including illustration and graphic design to have a solo exhibition at our Garbos space in Southsea.

This exhibition will run for a period of 2 months and is a chance to showcase your talent to a wider audience and to make art matter in the community.

Our Garbos Gallery space is situated in the heart of Southsea, inside the modern Garbos salon and yet separate from it.  Sticks Gallery/Live Art Local CIC took over management of this space from Island City Art and before that Add Art, so it has a history of showcasing great emerging artists.

There is no theme and the only prerequisite is that work submitted is not offensive (graphic nudity, swear words, concerning religion, etc) and ready to be hung.  This means that work must be framed (if required), with loops or D-Rings at the back and wire or cord connecting them (mirrorplates are not an option).  The gallery wall uses a hanging system and no work is attached to the wall itself.  Due to this box canvases also need to come with hanging wire.  Works on paper can be hung without a frame with the use of clips that we can supply.

This space can accommodate between 1 large (2x2m) piece or numerous smaller pieces.

Our current exhibition in this space, Andrew De Bere’s “Painting with Light” has been very popular and half of the pieces have already sold.  If you wish to see his work it is on display until our next exhibition in the space.

You can submit to this open call either as a guest with a one off donation of £3.  We are a not for profit organisation and this money helps us to carry on our work and contributes to the exhibition costs.  There is no other money involved.  To submit work please pay your donation via paypal. Upon payment you will be redirected to a form where you will be asked to complete your details and upload up to 4 examples of your work.

Please note this opportunity closes on Sunday 24th April at midday  and we will notify the successful artist by Monday 25th April.   The exhibition runs from 2nd May until 4th July.  Work can be sold during this time.

GRANT TO BRING HISTORY TO LIFE IN FAREHAM

Live Art Local CIC/ Sticks Gallery would love to let you all in on a little secret.

A few months ago we applied for some funding to run a series of workshops examining the history of Fareham borough with older, isolated people living in the borough; families with disabled children and adults with learning disabilities.  These workshops would culminate in an exhibition and the publication of a new heritage trail map for Fareham.

We are very pleased and excited to announce that on Friday we received confirmation that we had been successful in our grant application.  The workshops will run this summer and will be a chance for our chosen groups to get creative, make new friends, learn new skills, find out about Fareham’s history and produce an exhibition and history trail they can feel proud of.

After publication the heritage trail will be available to buy and all monies from the sale of the map will be divided between Live Art Local CIC and charities/groups that help those groups working on the project.

We will be posting more information in due course

Private View Thursday 10th Dec -- Work in Progress

What’s it about….?

This new show offers a chance for members of the public to see what goes on behind the creation of a piece of art.  It enables us to see the process of making art, and as this is the first in a series of exhibition detailing these emerging artists and their move into being artists out on their own, the progress they make on their work throughout their final year of study, culminating in their degree show to be held at Portsmouth University and in London next year.

The private view runs between 5:30-7:30pm this evening and all the artists will be on hand to discuss their work with you and answer any questions.  The Live Art Local CIC/Sticks gallery team will also be there to discuss and answer any questions you might have about us and what we plan for the future.

There will also be free food and drink and if we can make them in time lovely homemade mince pies and mulled wine to get you in the festive spirit!

Don’t know where sticks is, don’t worry, you can find us in the Fareham Shopping Centre at Unit 79a just inside opposite Millets

Can’t make the preview don’t worry we are open every Thursday – Saturday 10:30 am – 3pm

Christmas Art Market Locks Heath

Rainy Weather…………………

On Saturday 28th November we held our Christmas Artist-Maker market at Locks Heath Shopping Village.  Sadly due to the weather and our offer to participating artists of a refund if they decided not to come owing to the weather we were down considerably on our original number of artists and makers.

Christmas Art Market Locks Heath

Still that is all part of being British and our weather.  We will be back in 2016
