Jane Walker’s art practice is an exploration of line in 2D work. Coming from a traditional painting background she has reduced painting down to just lines, a rule of her practice is that these lines need to convey the totality of the message.
“For over 10 years I worked in watercolour my painting became more graphic with the lines being important, in a sense my current style is a distillation of watercolour techniques used in oil paint.”
Jane’s work is concerned with space in painting and its relationship to a human ‘dimension’ is a constant concern:
” The white lines in my work articulate space. Looking back at my work today’s sense of space in painting is an unimaginable development. I have explored this by thinking of it as a move backwards to a fragmented Medieval space. The lines are brittle, my cities are under pressure. The calligraphic marks have come from drawing dense urban environments, the marks I use are a sort of shorthand for cities.”
